In this paper, the authors present a recent study that uses cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, and in vitro transport experiments to describe the structural basis for functional diversity in the SLC11/NRAMP family of membrane transporters. This work identifies factors responsible for selectivity of classical NRAMPs for transition metal ions (Fe, Mn) and the NRMT clade for alkali metal ion (Mg).

In this paper, Fotiadis and his group present the crystal structure of the peptide transporter YePEPT in complex with LZNV, a modified Lys-Val dipeptide. The structure revealed the molecular interactions for inhibitor binding and a previously undescribed mostly hydrophobic pocket. The biochemical and structural information obtained from this study contribute to a better understanding of inhibitor binding and action of proton-dependent oligopeptide transporters.
