NCCR TransCure Young Scientist Award (for young scientists)
With this new award NCCR TransCure will fund two applications from advanced female PhD students or postdoctoral researchers working within NCCR TransCure. Preference will be given to proposals providing an added value to an existing NCCR TransCure project.The two best proposals will be awarded with 9’000 CHF for small pieces of equipment, consumables and/or travel expenses for specific congresses or events within the research field and 1’000 CHF as personal money award.
Requirements:
- Candidates are researchers (advanced PhD students (> 2 years) and postdoctoral fellows) that are either employed by or associated to NCCR TransCure.
- The maximum funding per proposal is CHF 9’000 + CHF 1’000 as personal money.
- Only one proposal per PI is allowed.
- NCCR TransCure Award can fund small pieces of equipment, consumables and/or travel expenses.
- Applications need to include a max. 3-page CV, a max. 2-page proposal and a 1-page budget plan, (all in one single file - pdf format).
- A short statement (per email) of the NCCR TransCure PI that he/she approves the proposal and will acknowledge the NCCR TransCure Young Scientist Award in related publications (if applicable) should be provided.

NCCR TransCure Mentor Mentee Lunch
NCCR TransCure fellows have been actively invited to join mentoring programs, however, these programs do not entirely meet the needs of the NCCR TransCure fellows. Therefore a more dynamic approach is taken with “mentor-mentee” lunches. The NCCR TransCure fellows (Postdoctoral and PhD students) are encouraged to meet with any NCCR TransCure PI to discuss professional items spanning a wide range of contents from career planning perspectives to how to master challenging situations or any other subject important for an academic career. The student may actively approach any PI of choice or contact the admin team to find an available PI. NCCR TransCure will support mentor-mentee lunches as initiation of an active mentor-mentee relationship with the reimbursement of travel expenses and one lunch meal costs. These lunch gatherings may serve as a kick-off for an informal but career planning focused mentoring relationship, without any structural program. It is entirely up to the fellow to organise further consultations with the PI after their first meeting.

Flexibility Grant by the SNSF (former 120% support grant)
Flexibility grants are aimed at postdocs and doctoral students who have to look after children at an important stage in their career and are therefore in need of more flexibility. The Flexibility Grant offers researchers two options to balance their professional and private lives: on the one hand, it can provide funding to help cover the external child care costs charged to the researcher. On the other hand, it can be used to help finance the salary of a support person, allowing the grantee to reduce his/her work quota. The two measures can also be combined.

Gender equality grant
The gender equality grant is aimed at young women researchers funded by the SNFS. It offer them additional individualised and flexible support for their career development.
An eligible person receives CHF 1000 per 12 months' approved project running time. The grant may be used to finance career support measures but does not cover family support measures.

Dual Career couples
The University of Bern offers also information and support for newly arrived "dual career couples". A dual career couple is one in which one partner is currently in employment negotiations with the University of Bern or is already a permanent employee of the university on at least a two-year contract, and the other partner first moved to Bern during the year in which the application is made.
Here grants are available for moving, home office and childcare expenses, as seed money to develop projects or grant applications and for costs associated with materials, equipment, intellectual property rights and the like. The pilot project also funds temporary positions in research and higher education.

AcademiaNet brings excellent women researchers to the fore
AcademiaNet is an Internet portal containing the profiles of outstanding women researchers in German-speaking countries. Created by the Robert Bosch Foundation and the science magazine "Spektrum der Wissenschaft" in 2010, the database makes it easier to find qualified female scientists to fill management positions and serve as members of scientific bodies. The SNSF joined up as a partner organisation in 2011. This year, it is nominating scientists for the first time.
